Community Health & Development

SKC Community Health & Development (CHD) is a grant-funded department that implements projects and activities to develop Healthy Living Practices (HLPs). Examples of those HLPs include fostering community through intergenerational learning, increasing physical activity (i.e., Native Games and outdoor experiences), food sovereignty efforts (i.e., gardening in the outdoor classroom, food distribution, food access, and growing self-efficacy through food preparation skill-building), health promotion and outreach, along with efforts to prevent and/or reduce the progression of substance misuse and related problems. Many of the department activities incorporate cultural learning through tribal history and language. CHD also offers student internship opportunities.

HLPS are activities that individuals participate in and incorporate into their daily lives.

HLPs are going to be different for each person.

HLPs can be shared with family, friends, and colleagues.

Here are a few examples of what HLPs can be:

  • Fostering community - through sharing a recipe or teaching someone a new skill (making fruit chips)
  • Being physically active (i.e. SKC Disc Golf Course, SKC Fitness Center, SKC Silver Fox)
  • Increasing our fresh fruit and vegetable intake
  • Drinking more water
  • Activities that incorporate intergenerational learning/learning together
  • Beading
  • Harvesting wild plants to make teas
  • Many more

SKC Food Distribution

Food Pantry (Client Choice)

In a client-choice pantry, individuals have the freedom to personally select their preferred foods rather than receiving a prepacked or standard bag of groceries. This model empowers clients to choose items according to their preferences, allowing them to abstain from selecting items they already possess, dislike, or cannot consume due to health or personal reasons.

Pantry Hours: Tuesdays 1 - 3 p.m. & Thursdays 3 - 6 p.m. (Store hours may vary during the Holidays.)

Location: JPP Building Room 11 (Lower Level)

Visits: SKC Employees and Students can shop once per week

Requests: Please bring reusable grocery bags to save on packaging costs.
