Gearing Up for Tech Jobs

ITE Department Program Updates at Salish Kootenai College
Tech jobs projected to grow at roughly twice the rate of overall employment – SKC Gears Up
Starting Fall Quarter 2022, Salish Kootenai College will offer two new one-year certificates in Computer Science (CS) and Computer Programming (CP). The Computer Science track emphasis provides fundamental computer science knowledge that will prepare a student to transfer to University of Montana or Montana State University to pursue a Bachelors in Computer Science. The Computer Programming track prepares students for full-stack (front-end and back-end) web development and entry-level programming positions. Both tracks provide a strong foundation in Python programming skills which are in high demand and very employable. Graduates will also be prepared for further study of additional programming languages and advanced computer science topics.
Courses in introductory Python programming, data structures and algorithms, database management systems, front-end development (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and back-end development (REST services and database storage access) are offered.
Additionally, the ITE department offers an AS degree in Information Technology which provides students with a solid background in PC repair technology, Windows and Linux client and server administration, cloud computing (AWS cloud practitioner certification) and computer network administration (CCNA certification preparation).
Employment opportunities in IT are plentiful in the local area (private industry and CS&KT Tribal positions) and many remote working positions for people with programming skills are also available with excellent salaries. While the CS, CP, and IT pathways are challenging curriculums designed for full-time study with complementary coursework in Native American studies and communication electives, part-time studies are also possible to explore if the programs are of interest to the student.
