Academic Skills Lab

Student Support Services (SSS) offers classes in reading and study skills, basic math and basic English. The placement test, given before registration, determines the need for assistance in basic skills. Students who are first generation college students, low income, and/or have a disability qualify for these services. All advisors have information about this program.

Math and Sciences Lab

Located in the Beaverhead Building, the Math/Science Skills Lab focuses on helping students obtain the skill level necessary to succeed in all levels of mathematics and science courses. The lab is staffed by a coordinator and several part-time tutors. Electronic resources are available for use in the lab.

Molecular Biology and Biophysics Research Lab

The Salish Kootenai College Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Research Laboratory was established in 2005 as part of SKC’s commitment to provide enhanced educational opportunities to tribal college students. The MBL is the only research laboratory for molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and biomedical-related research at any of the nation’s tribal colleges and universities.

Continuing Education Center

SKC’s Center for Continuing Education was established to meet the growing needs and demands of the Tribal Departments and the Indian community on the Flathead Reservation. The purpose of the Center is to provide personal/professional development, community interest, and specific training courses or services to meet the particular needs of the departments and the Reservation. The Center also provides a suitable training location and necessary materials for career enhancement. Regular college-level credits are not awarded for learning activities, but certain activities may be evaluated by a system of uniform continuing education units (CEU). Such units are granted in accordance with the following guidelines set forth by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.

Each CEU represents 10 contact hours of participation in an organized community education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instructors. Community education, as used in this definition, includes all learning experiences in organized formats that impact noncredit education to individuals who meet participation requirements. These properties of community education may be applied equally under the system regardless of the teaching-learning format, program duration, source of sponsorship, subject matter, level, audience, or purpose.

The number of units to be awarded is determined by considering the number of contact hours of instruction, or the equivalent, included in the educational activity. Reasonable allowance may be made for activities such as required reports, laboratory assignments, field trips, and supervised study.

Educational Opportunity Center

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) provides information, advising, and technical assistance to adults seeking to further their education. Funded by the Department of Education and housed in the Kenmille Building, the goal and philosophy of the EOC is to make education more accessible. The staff provide services to adult learners who are low income, first generation college students, and members of under served populations. The EOC serves in assisting with admissions, financial aid, defaulted student loans, a career, college, and basic education resource.

Media Center

The SKC Media Center is located on campus in the D’Arcy McNickle Building. The Center coordinates the use and production of audiovisual materials for the college and also produces programs under contract with outside agencies, institutions and governments. Classes in photography, video production, and mass communication are also offered under the general studies program and taught by faculty in the film and television production department. The department uses current digital and nonlinear production technology and traditional still
camera formats.
